He can buy any wine he wants, he came 334 on the Forbes list of the world’s billionaires, however he sited Heartland’s Directors Cut Shiraz from Australia as a recently discovered favorite. Despite his wealth, he said he likes wine for between US $25 and US$30 which represent good value. A man after own hearts here at Wine a Day!

Keeping with a big red wine theme in the same price range, this week I have selected a Portuguese wine to share with you. The Esporao 2006 Red Reserve. It is a blend made up of Trincadeira, Aragones, Cabernet Sauvingnon and Alicante Bouschet grapes. Esporao is a very well respected estate in the Alentejo region in Portugal. The regions is famed for its year round powerful sunshine and searing summer heat which makes each grape in this wine packed with character. It has a peppery or mineral taste to it which matches it with red meat dishes perfectly. Although, it is great on its own or with some cheese, it comes alive with lamb or beef.

Although, Portugal an “old world” wine making country, Esporao’s wine-maker is from Australia and their red wines especially have a “new world” punch to them. It is a very interesting combination of the ancient wine making culture mixed with the new techniques able to be used in Australia.
