Wine of the week – Finding a wine to suit your Thai

Thai food; fragrant, spicy, fresh and exotic. A fantastic meal for the summer! What do you drink with it though? You have all the wonderful flavours; however with all the flavours you often find clashes with many types of wine from all regions of the world. So where do you turn? Delicate New Zealand white? No. Full, heavy South African red? Nah… The newer wine producing countries have not really got the hang of a sweet white with enough character just yet.

For me the old world of wine production comes up with the best option; Germany’s Mosel Region. When they began producing the distinctive white wines in the valleys of The Mosel around a century ago, I am sure they didn’t have coconut milk, palm sugar, lime and chili in mind. Their Riesling wines, however, match these combinations perfectly.

It is floral and quite sweet when drinking it alone, but don’t let that put you off! When you match it with food form South East Asia; it compliments it perfectly.

As an added bonus, if you have a glass with your meal and then leave the bottle out of the fridge, it can double as a light desert wine. The versatile S.A. Prum Spatlese Riesling is around €20 to €30, depending where you, so not the cheapest wine, but it’s well worth it for a great match with good food. What you get for the money is probably the best experience you can have with a wine along with Thai food.
