2010 World Cup of Wine
The FIFA World Cup Draw has taken place and there are some interesting groups. Competition will be tough to make it to the next round, even for some of the favourites. Looking at the draw with my interest in wine in mind, I noticed many of the old and new world wine producing countries are competing against each other in this competition. Therefore I have decided to get your input as to who would win a competition between the wine producing nations competing at the 2010 World Cup.
I am looking for you to get behind your county’s wine and give us your recommendation as to who should win the 2010 World Cup of Wine.
There needs to be some rules, otherwise some of the most inaccessible wines would win.
So here are the rules:
1. Wines under €20 only (click here to convert to/from Euro) to make it accessible to as many people as possible. If you can provide a link to verify the price it would help greatly!
2. Vintages can only be 2006 and younger. Wines produced since the last World Cup in Germany.
3. You choose the wine and write a review about it in English – I am happy if you paste a link from your web site or facebook page.
4. The best quality wine and review will represent their country. I will evaluate the entertainment value of the review, so make it interesting, quirky and individual, because tasting notes anyone can look up elsewhere.
5. The judge (me) will choose the winning entry for each country and the decision is final. However if your wine receives lots of comments it will go a long way towards the winning entry.
6. The 32 winners from each country will then be voted on by you for us to find a winner.
7. The wine which represents the country with the most votes wins.
8. The winning reviewer will win a to be determined prize (I am hoping there may be a sponsor for this – if you are interested in providing something to show your brand contact us!)
9. There are some countries which do not have (to the best of my knowledge) grape based wine. Therefore their national fermented beverage will be acceptable to be reviewed, for example, rice wine or palm wine.
10. The group stages (the selection of each wine to represent each country) will be open until the 31st March. Then your votes will be collected through to the 10th June on the eve of the World Cup in South Africa.
11. Have some fun with this! It is only every 4 years we have a World Cup.
Now you know the rules soon you will be able to contribute to each of the follow countries in 8 different groups below!
Group A
South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay & France
Group B
Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea & Greece
Group C
England, USA, Algeria & Slovenia
Group D
Germany, Australia, Serbia & Ghana
Group E
The Netherlands, Denmark, Japan & Cameroon
Group F
Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand & Slovakia
Group G
Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast & Portugal
Group H
Spain, Switzerland, Honduras & Chile
It would be great if we could have some national pride shown as well as sharing some fantastic good value wines. Especially for some countries where I have not had the pleasure of sampling their wine. Or you could adopt a country to review if you wish. So get involved, get tasting, get writing and get into the sprit of the World Cup in South Africa! Here is to fair play and a great competition. Cheers!
